Winter!
The first snow of the year has fallen, and it’s wonderful. I woke up this morning to heavy snow falling out of the sky. Not the grey, depressing sky of the past few months, but a white and pure one. All the ugliness of this year’s Autumn was washed away and left pure with the marking of winter - the end of the year and the promise of a new start.
I wanted to take a picture of what I saw when I opened the door. It’s not a great picture, but it is real. Go ahead and click on it to see a bigger one. There’s a wall of forest that runs outside of my front door and it sounded like there were lumberjacks at work. Every few seconds it sounded like a heavy axe was striking a tree. I decided to go out for a walk (and left my camera at home - it’s not water proof, as far as I know), and when I got closer to the trees I realized the sound was branches breaking off. The weak branches that couldn’t handle the heavy snow were snapping off in a symphony of noise all around me. I watched a large branch on a tall tree in the backyard of a nearby house snap off. The heavy load fell on a few other branches on the way down and tore them all off before landing with a heavy thump below. It was beautiful and amazing all at the same time.
Later on, after it grew dark, there was what I thought was a flash of lightning outside of my window. There was no thunder. Turned out, there was a big electrical explosion on a transformer or something… but I didn’t even get a flicker on my lights. Lucky!
